Biography

Elisabeth J. Nicol is a full professor and Fourth Year Undergraduate Coordinator in the Department of Physics at the University of Guelph. She completed her PhD in Physics at McMaster University and subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at McMaster University and as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She joined the University of Guelph's Department of Physics in 1994. Nicol has also held visiting scientist positions at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. Her research focuses on theoretical condensed matter physics, particularly in the areas of high temperature superconductivity and Dirac materials. She is an expert in the BCS-Eliashberg theory of superconductivity, and her work explores the properties of superconductors and their technological applications in areas like MRI machines and quantum computers. Nicol has received numerous awards for her research contributions, including the NSERC Discovery Grant and the John Charles Polanyi Prize in Physics.
