Since my medical studies, I have sought challenges and innovations in healthcare. From the first computer patient simulations in 1984 for teaching Internal Medicine to policy papers on the income distribution of medical specialists in relation to working hours and numerus fixus (Vorst Commission, 1985), to the current challenges as chair of the National Expertise Center for Child Abuse (LECK), former chair of the Medical Ethical Review Board of UMCU, and former member of the national Taskforce Child Abuse and Sexual Abuse from the Ministries of Justice and Health. Throughout these challenges, the patient and their social context have always been my greatest source of inspiration. The patient indicates where priorities and gaps in care lie. My choice for scientific research with young people suffering from fatigue and pain is driven by the lack of effective care for these groups, while 30-40% need it.
