Biography

Eliza Steinbock holds the Chair in Transgender Studies, Art, and Cultural Activism at the Department of Literature and Art, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Maastricht University. Her work investigates mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion in art, culture, media, and heritage studies, aiming to challenge inequalities through various practices. She is the director of the Centre for Gender Diversity, a platform that connects researchers with societal partners to enhance public scholarship. Eliza leads significant projects, such as the national consortium ‘Critical Visitor: Intersectional Approaches to Rethinking Inclusivity in Heritage Spaces’, funded by the Dutch Research Council, which examines how heritage institutions adapt to the demands of contemporary visitors. She has published over 40 articles and book chapters, notably in the fields of contemporary visual culture, gender, and sexuality. Publications include her award-winning book, 'Shimmering Images: Trans Cinema, Embodiment, Aesthetics of Change' (Duke University Press, 2019), and her role as co-editor of the new book series on critical trans studies. Eliza actively contributes to research initiatives that address the impact of transgender representation in culture and participates in various international collaborations, aiming to map and analyze queer and trans archives in Europe.
