Biography

Elizabeth M. Armstrong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology with joint affiliations in The Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and the Office of Population Research. Her research interests encompass public health, the sociology of medicine, risk, obstetrics, and medical ethics. Armstrong is currently conducting research on diseases, agenda-setting, the evolution of fetal personhood, and the ethics of obstetrical practice. She has authored and co-authored articles in prominent journals such as Health Affairs, Social Science & Medicine, Journal of Marriage and Family, International Family Planning Perspectives, and Studies in Family Planning. Her book, "Conceiving Risk, Bearing Responsibility: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Diagnosis and Moral Disorder" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2003), explores how medical knowledge and societal norms regarding alcohol consumption and pregnancy have evolved. Armstrong was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholar in Health Policy Research at the University of Michigan from 1998 to 2000. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology and Demography from the University of Pennsylvania in 1998.
