Dr. Elizabeth Chen

Biography

Elizabeth S. Chen is the Interim Director of the Brown Center for Biomedical Informatics (BCBI) and an Associate Professor in Medical Science and Health Services, Policy & Practice at Brown University. Her research focuses on leveraging electronic health data and health information communications technology to support biomedical discovery and healthcare delivery. Dr. Chen's specific research interests encompass clinical documentation, clinical decision support, health information needs, standards interoperability, natural language processing, data mining, and machine learning. At BCBI, she leads the Clinical Informatics Innovation Implementation (CI3) Laboratory, which aims to innovate the use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) for both primary and secondary purposes, implement digital solutions for operational clinical research systems, and inspire future clinical informaticians. Her current projects focus on using data and technology to improve mental health and child health. She has held previous appointments at Columbia University, Partners HealthCare/Brigham Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, and the University of Vermont. Dr. Chen is actively involved in the American Medical Informatics Association and the American College of Medical Informatics, where she has previously served as Chair of the Biomedical Informatics, Library, and Data Sciences Review Committee at the National Library of Medicine.
