Dr. Elizabeth Czach

Biography

Elizabeth Czach is a professor in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta, specializing in English and Film Studies. With a rich background as a programmer for Canadian film at the Toronto International Film Festival from 1995 to 2005, Czach has served as the past president of the Film Studies Association of Canada and currently serves as the editor for the Canadian Journal of Film and Media Studies. Her research interests are primarily focused on film festivals, Canadian cinema, and the study of amateur and home movies. In her scholarly work, she co-edited the volume "Cinema Pain: Quebec's Nostalgic Screen" in 2020 and has contributed to various academic journals, discussing themes such as feminist media histories and the role of women in film. Czach's teaching includes a variety of undergraduate and graduate-level courses covering topics like film analysis, Quebec cinema, and feminist television. She has been engaged in a long-term research project titled 'Ticket Adventure,' which aims to recover the professional filmmaking careers of women directors in North America from 1930 to the 1980s. She is also working on a monograph about Quebec filmmaker Lea Pool's work.
