Biography

Elizabeth Dickey's research focuses on developing processing-structure-property relationships in material systems to understand the macroscopic physical properties governed by grain boundaries and internal interfaces. She places particular emphasis on understanding the role of grain boundary chemistry in electrical and chemical transport. Additionally, she is interested in the role of microstructure and interfaces on the mechanical properties of eutectic ceramic composites, having developed high-temperature armor applications. Her research involves using a range of analytical techniques, with a particular focus on electron microscopy and spectroscopy, to comprehend the structure and chemistry of internal defects in materials. Dickey received her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University. Before joining Carnegie Mellon University, she spent a decade in the Materials Science Engineering Department at North Carolina State University as a professor and associate department head, accumulating over 200 publications and more than 20,000 citations. She has received numerous awards, including Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, and the Robert B. Sosman Award.
