Biography

Elizabeth Fitting is a social anthropologist with research interests in social, cultural, and political practices that shape or challenge capitalist processes, particularly in the areas of migration, food, and agriculture. Her work has explored the political economy of food, including topics such as the regulation and public debate surrounding transgenic maize in Mexico, the effects of structural adjustment and trade liberalization on agricultural livelihoods, and labor migration in response to seed regulations in Colombia and Mexico. Currently, she focuses on the livelihoods of seasonal agricultural workers from Mexico and Jamaica employed in Atlantic Canada, addressing questions related to the food system, social reproduction, and the uneven histories and geographies of the global economy. Dr. Fitting is the principal investigator of the Warming Oceans, Changing Livelihoods project, part of the Climate Justice: Values and Vulnerabilities Lab. She has contributed to the Nova Scotia Migration Research Forum, an interdisciplinary network focused on migration and mobility research in Nova Scotia. In her previous research, Dr. Fitting has collaborated with various researchers to collect first-hand accounts regarding the 2SLGBTQ+ AIDS crisis in Canada and has authored numerous publications on related topics.
