Biography

Elizabeth Joanne Gifford is a Research Professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy, where she plays a pivotal role in directing the Health Policy Undergraduate Certificate Program and serves as a core faculty member at the Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy. Her research focuses on the intersection of health and social services, particularly exploring policies and practices that support children and families. Gifford leads a multidisciplinary research team, investigating various components of public institutions, education systems, and criminal justice. Over her career, she has received several accolades including the 2017 Presidential Meritorious Award at Duke University. With an academic background that includes a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University, she has extensively published on topics such as child maltreatment, social-emotional health, and the health-related quality of life among veterans. Gifford's work not only advances theoretical understanding but also contributes directly to policy innovations that impact health and social welfare.
