Biography

Professor Elizabeth O. Harrington received her PhD in Biological Chemistry from Drexel University, Philadelphia. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital/Harvard Medical School before joining Brown University in 1997. Her research focuses on characterizing intracellular signaling mechanisms that regulate endothelial cell functions and responses to environmental cues, particularly in the context of vascular injury and its implications in disorders such as sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Harrington's work aims to identify molecules that regulate endothelial cell functions, leading to therapeutic strategies for controlling vascular tissue damage and enhancing repair. Her lab investigates endothelial barrier function, migration, angiogenesis, apoptosis, and autophagy, examining how endocytosis modulates endothelial monolayer permeability. Harrington has also focused on understanding the signaling molecules that influence pulmonary circulation in response to oxidative stress. She has been awarded several grants from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association to support her research endeavors.
