Biography

Elizabeth S. Heckscher is an Associate Professor in the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago. Her lab focuses on the assembly, function, and evolution of neural circuits, particularly sensorimotor circuits in the spinal cord that process various stimuli and generate patterned muscle contractions crucial for animal movement. Heckscher's research aims to understand how these neural circuits are formed and how they evolve over time to allow for diverse animal behaviors. She has a background in both cell biology and biology, earning her PhD at the University of California and her Bachelor’s degree from Brown University. During her postdoctoral training at the University of Oregon, she specialized in neuronal circuits and gained insight into the developmental processes of stem cells and their impact on neural circuit assembly. Heckscher has published extensively on topics including Drosophila evolution, neuron function, and the role of transcription factors in neural development.
