Dr. Elizabeth Kessler

Biography

Elizabeth Kessler’s research and teaching focus on twentieth and twenty-first century American visual culture. Her diverse interests include the role of aesthetics in visual culture and media, particularly in contemporary science, with a special emphasis on astronomy. She explores the interchange of technology and the ways we see and represent the world around us, as well as the history of photography and representation in fashion media. Kessler’s book, 'Picturing Cosmos: Hubble Space Telescope Images and the Astronomical Sublime,' which delves into the aesthetics of deep space images, was published in 2012. She is currently working on a new book about extraterrestrial time capsules and is developing a project on fashion photography.
