Biography

Professor Elizabeth Eva Leach is a music theorist and musicologist with a wide-ranging interest in the minutiae of musical structures and manuscripts within the broadest cultural, historical, and philosophical contexts of music. Her principal focus lies on music poetry from the fourteenth century, particularly in written songs from that period. At the Faculty, Professor Leach lectures on music pertaining to Guillaume de Machaut and the Trouvères. Currently, she serves as the Director of Research. A fellow of the British Academy, her research interests encompass songs, counterpoint, and singing, with a particular emphasis on medieval secular lyrics in French. Additionally, she explores topics including music philosophy, ideas of musical meaning, music analysis—especially pre-tonal repertoires—gender in music, and music literature.
