Dr. Elizabeth Legge

Biography

Elizabeth Legge is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on North American and Modern/Contemporary European art, with particular interest in movements such as Dada and Surrealism, as well as contemporary Canadian and British art. Legge's scholarly work explores the intricate relationship between language and imagery in art and the instrumental uses of stereotypes across religious, racial, and national contexts. In addition to her teaching and research at the University of Toronto, she served as a visiting professor at the Humanities Centre at Johns Hopkins University in 2005. Her published works include explorations of themes ranging from the aesthetics of cuteness in contemporary art to in-depth analyses of artists such as Jeff Koons and Michael Snow. Legge’s contributions have appeared in notable journals and edited volumes, further solidifying her standing in the field of Art History.
