Elizabeth Matsui is a pediatric allergist-immunologist and epidemiologist serving as Professor and Director of the Center for Health & Environment: Education & Research at Dell Medical School. She is an internationally recognized expert in environmental exposures and their effects on asthma and allergic conditions. Her major research focus includes housing-related exposures, specifically identifying mouse infestation as a significant environmental cause for asthma-related emergency department visits and hospitalizations among children in Baltimore and similar cities across the U.S. Dr. Matsui has collaborated with local governments and non-profits to address health issues related to housing, earning the Baltimore City Health Equity Leadership Award in 2017. She completed her undergraduate studies in molecular biology and her medical degree at Vanderbilt University, along with a pediatric residency at the University of California, San Francisco. After her residency, she practiced general pediatrics and developed an interest in asthma and environmental health, which led her to complete a fellowship in allergy and immunology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Matsui obtained a Master of Health Science in epidemiology from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2003, being promoted to Professor in 2015. In 2018, she joined Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
