Dr. Elizabeth Nilsen

Biography

Elizabeth Nilsen is a professor at the University of Waterloo, specializing in cognitive development and social communication. Her research primarily focuses on understanding how children and adolescents navigate communicative interactions, especially in the context of social cognitive skills. Dr. Nilsen's work addresses the role of individual differences, such as temperament and cognitive abilities, in shaping socio-communicative behaviors. She examines the developmental processes behind effective communication, particularly how perspective-taking influences interactions among peers. Through her Cognitive Development Lab, she supervises graduate students and promotes collaborative projects that delve into the complexities of youth communication, including the impact of technology on social interactions. Her laboratory aims to foster an inclusive research environment where students can explore their interests and gain hands-on experience in both academic and clinical settings, where they apply evidence-based practices to support young people's development. In addition to her teaching and research, Dr. Nilsen is also registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and is involved in the clinical supervision of graduate students at the UW Centre for Mental Health Research and Treatment.
