Biography

Elizabeth Qian holds a joint appointment as an Assistant Professor at Georgia Tech in the Schools of Aerospace Engineering and Computational Science Engineering. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on developing new computational methods that enable engineering design decision-making in complex systems. She specializes in creating efficient surrogate models for model reduction and scientific machine learning, as well as developing multifidelity approaches to accelerate expensive computations and perform uncertainty quantification, optimization, and control. Previously, Qian was a von Karman Instructor at Caltech in the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences. She is a recipient of several awards, including the NSF Faculty Early Career Development Award in 2025, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Program Award in 2024, and the Associated Students of California Institute of Technology Teaching Award in 2022. Additionally, she earned recognition for her work with the SIAM Student Paper Prize and has been a Fannie John Hertz Foundation Fellow, as well as an alumna of the U.S. Fulbright student program. Qian earned her PhD, SM, and SB degrees from the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and she currently holds a visiting appointment as a Hans Fischer Fellow at the Technical University of Munich.
