Biography

Prior to joining the University of Calgary Faculty of Law in 2023, Elizabeth Steyn held the position of Cassels Brock Fellow in Mining Finance Law at Western University's Faculty of Law. There, she led the law school's interdisciplinary sustainable development curriculum and supported the Global Sustainability Certification Graduate Diploma in Mining Law, Finance, and Sustainability. Steyn is a member of various legal and mining associations, including the Foundation Natural Resources Energy Law and the Canadian Institute of Mining. She focuses on responsible sustainable practices in the mining and metals sector, exploring contemporary issues like regulatory gaps in deep-sea mining and the development of an international framework for space mining. Steyn has served as a Principal Investigator on a United Nations Environment Programme project related to responsible mining and the energy transition. With expertise spanning numerous legal fields, including natural resources and international trade law, she has authored and co-authored 16 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and has spoken at national and international conferences across four continents. Steyn received her LL.D. from Université de Montréal, and her LL.M. and LLB from the University of South Africa and University of Johannesburg, respectively.
