Ellan Spero’s research focuses on how people envision human progress through systems, institutions, objectives, and narratives. As a historian working at the intersection of technology, business, and higher education, Spero explores narratives of progress, systems of production, and academic-industrial ecosystems, as well as the interactions between humans and material infrastructures. Spero holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from Cornell University in Fiber Science and Apparel Design, an MA in Museum Studies and Textile Conservation from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and a PhD in History, Anthropology, Science, Technology, and Society from MIT. In addition to working at MIT, Spero is a visiting scientist at the Smart Living Lab at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Fribourg, Switzerland, and a joint researcher at the Singapore University of Technology and Design.
