Dr. Ellen Arruda

Biography

Dr. Ellen Arruda is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan, where she also serves as the Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering. She holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has received several awards for her research and teaching excellence. Her research focuses on the mechanical behavior of materials, particularly polymers and elastomers, and their applications in soft tissue engineering and crashworthiness in automotive contexts. Arruda has published extensively in these fields, contributing valuable insights into tissue constructs and deformation mechanisms of polymers. In 2022, she was elected a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, highlighting her significant contributions to the field. Arruda has received numerous accolades including the A.C. Eringen Medal and the James R. Rice Medal, affirming her status as a leader in mechanical engineering and biomechanics. She actively participates in various seminars and has been recognized as an outstanding engineering alumnus by her alma mater, Pennsylvania State University.
