Biography

Ellen Bassett is the John Portman Chair and Dean at the College of Design at Georgia Institute of Technology. She is an urban planner with extensive experience in academia and international development planning. Previously, she served as a Professor and Chair in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning in the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia. Bassett has held leadership positions including Associate Dean and Research Director for the Real Estate + Design Development program and Chair of the UVA Faculty Senate. Her research interests focus on land use planning law, climate change and sustainability planning, health and the built environment, and international development with a special focus on cities in the Global South. She has significant expertise and experience working as a consultant for international development agencies in Sub-Saharan Africa, drawing upon her comprehensive educational background in urban and regional planning and history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
