Biography

Ellen Langer earned her Ph.D. from Yale University in Social Clinical Psychology and joined the faculty at Harvard University in 1977. In 1981, she became the first woman to be tenured at Harvard's Department of Psychology. She is widely regarded as the mother of mindfulness, having authored five books on the subject, including her best-seller, 'Mindfulness', and her latest work, 'The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Chronic Health'. Langer's research focuses on health, happiness, decision-making, and education, viewed through the lens of mindfulness. Over her career, she has received several accolades, including the Distinguished Scientist Award, the Staats Award for Unifying Psychology, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Liberty Science Genius Award. Langer has also been recognized as one of Harvard's favorite professors in multiple selections by students.
