Dr. Ellen Maceachen

Biography

Ellen MacEachen is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo's School of Public Health and Health Systems and holds a cross appointment with the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute at the University of Toronto. With a Ph.D. in Public Health Sciences from the University of Toronto, her research focuses on work disability policy and occupational health systems, particularly concerning the participation of injured and vulnerable workers in the labor force. MacEachen has an extensive background in qualitative research methodologies and has led numerous research initiatives aimed at improving the public policies governing occupational health and disability management. She co-directs the Centre for Research on Work Disability Policy, which is dedicated to addressing the fragmented Canadian work disability system through collaboration with various stakeholders, including governmental bodies, community organizations, and labor groups. Her academic contributions have been recognized through multiple awards, and she has been actively involved in mentoring students and developing courses in qualitative methods pertinent to health research. MacEachen's work is informed by a critical social science perspective, considering the social, political, legal, and economic contexts of health systems. Among her notable achievements are leading significant SSHRC-funded research projects focusing on disability policy and the implementation of effective occupational health interventions.
