Dr. Ellen Mackenzie

Biography

Ellen J. MacKenzie is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University. With a joint appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, she is a recognized expert in health policy and management, as well as biostatistics. Dr. MacKenzie’s research focuses on the effects of health services policies on the short- and long-term consequences of traumatic injuries. She has contributed to the development of evaluation tools for measuring the severity and outcomes of injuries, particularly in assessing the organization and financing of trauma care and rehabilitation performance. Her research has advanced the understanding of the economic and social impacts of injuries, accounting for both personal and environmental factors that influence recovery and the return to work. Dr. MacKenzie co-founded the Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (METRC), aimed at establishing treatment guidelines for optimal care of individuals suffering high-energy extremity trauma. She has received numerous honors for her contributions to the field, including being named an honorary fellow of the American Association for Surgery of Trauma and recognition by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for her leadership in injury prevention.
