Biography

Ellen Muir is an economic theorist whose research focuses on studying the behavior of firms regarding market power. Her work utilizes the tools of mechanism design to revisit a number of classical questions in economics, including how powerful firms design their products, procure inputs, and hire workers. This approach offers a novel unifying perspective on critical topics such as optimal pricing for sellers, employment strategies for firms, regulatory interventions regarding property rights, and clarifies phenomena like rationing, involuntary unemployment, and opaque pricing that often appear perplexing. Ellen received her PhD in economics from Stanford University in 2022 and has also earned a PhD in mathematics and statistics from the University of Melbourne. Prior to joining MIT Sloan, she was a Prize Fellow in economics, history, and politics at Harvard University.
