Biography

Ellen Stewart is a social scientist working at the intersection of medical sociology and health policy. She joined the University of Glasgow as Professor of Public Policy and Health in 2024, having previously served as co-Director of the Centre for Health Policy at the University of Strathclyde from 2021 to 2024. From 2016 to 2021, she was a Chancellor's Fellow at the Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society at the University of Edinburgh. Her prior roles also include Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Edinburgh Medical School and Research Assistant at the University of St Andrews Medical School. Ellen is an editor of the journal Sociology of Health and Illness and an active member of the Social Policy Association. Additionally, she was appointed as an interdisciplinary expert on the REF 2029 Main Panel C for Social Sciences. Her latest book, 'Britain Loves the NHS: Practices of Care and Contestation', was published in 2023 by Policy Press. She is currently involved in multiple research projects focusing on digital solutions in healthcare within Scottish prisons and public engagement in evidence-based policy. Ellen's work aims to improve public policy through understanding the dynamics of health system interactions and citizen participation in health services.
