Elliot Meyerowitz is the George W. Beadle Professor of Biology at the California Institute of Technology and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He received his A.B. from Columbia University in 1973, followed by an M.Phil. from Yale University in 1975 and a Ph.D. in 1977. Meyerowitz has held several academic positions, starting as an Assistant Professor at Caltech from 1980 to 1985, then becoming an Associate Professor from 1985 to 1989, and a Professor from 1989 to 2002. He has been the Beadle Professor since 2002 and has also served as the Executive Officer for Biology from 1995 to 2000 and Chair of the Division of Biology from 2000 to 2010. His research focuses on integrated regulatory networks underlying plant development, particularly the role of shoot apical meristems in flowering plants. His lab investigates how these structures contribute to the growth and development of plants and their implications for human welfare, including food production and carbon balance in the atmosphere. Meyerowitz's work combines experimental techniques with computational modeling to understand gene expression patterns and their roles in plant development.
Most Caltech graduate programs are PhD-only. GRE General and Subject tests vary by department; many have made them optional or no longer accept them.
