Biography

Elly Hol is the Vice-Dean of Research at the University Medical Center Utrecht and a full professor specializing in glial biology and brain diseases at Utrecht University. She is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and Academia Europaea. As the head of the department of Translational Neuroscience at the University Medical Center Utrecht Brain Center, her research focuses on the role of glial cells in brain diseases. Hol aims to elucidate the molecular and functional changes in glial cells that contribute to the pathogenesis of neurological and psychiatric diseases. Her work is translational and includes studies on glial cells using human post-mortem brain tissue, human cell models, and mouse models of brain diseases. She trained as a medical biologist with a specialization in molecular neurobiology and obtained her PhD from Utrecht. Hol received the Max-Planck Fellowship and has furthered her research at the Max-Planck Institute.
