Biography

Elmar Prenner completed his Diplom Ingenieur degree in Biochemistry and Food Chemistry from the University of Technology in Graz, Austria. He earned his PhD in Biochemistry from the same university and has served as a research assistant, developing bioassays. He received an EMBO postdoctoral fellowship and worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany. In 2002, he joined the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary, becoming an AHFMR scholar. Dr. Prenner founded Aqua Screen in 2014, later known as D-Tex, and also founded Alberta BioPhotonics to focus on developing new instruments for water quality analysis. His research encompasses various areas including biomembrane architecture, lipid-protein interactions, and nanoparticle-based drug delivery, particularly concerning heavy metal interactions in biomembranes. He has established complex biomimetic membranes to study drug interactions and has developed handheld instruments for environmental water analysis, ensuring significant contributions in both academic and practical domains.
