Biography

Eloise Lawrence is a Clinical Professor at Harvard Law School where she serves as Faculty Director of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau (HLAB). She oversees the operation of the nation’s oldest student-run civil legal aid clinic, guiding the formal curriculum and supervising clinical teaching staff. Lawrence co-teaches housing law and policy and has spent her career representing low-income individuals through grassroots community organizations. With 15 years of experience, she has worked closely with HLS students to protect homeowners and tenants facing displacement, eviction, and foreclosure, employing a movement lawyering approach known as the 'sword shield' model, which promotes partnerships with community organizations. Lawrence aims to empower vulnerable populations by fostering collective power. Prior to her tenure at Harvard, she worked on civil rights class actions and various litigation cases for environmental justice groups, including the Greater Boston Legal Services and the Conservation Law Foundation. She began her legal career as a Skadden Fellow in Chicago. Lawrence holds a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and a B.A. from Stanford University.
