Els Broens is an associate professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University. She is a trained veterinarian with extensive experience in farm animal practice and has held positions as both a lecturer and researcher. In 2011, she completed her PhD focused on livestock-associated MRSA in pigs at Wageningen University and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, becoming a Dutch specialist in Veterinary Microbiology. Els has contributed to numerous research projects addressing zoonoses such as COVID-19 and issues related to antimicrobial resistance in companion animals. She is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Microbiology and heavily involved in supervising PhD students and residents. As a member of various national and international committees, she contributes to policy and research initiatives aimed at enhancing veterinary diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship.
