Biography

Els Broens is an associate professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University. She is a trained veterinarian with extensive experience in farm animal practice and has held positions as both a lecturer and researcher. In 2011, she completed her PhD focused on livestock-associated MRSA in pigs at Wageningen University and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, becoming a Dutch specialist in Veterinary Microbiology. Els returned to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine where she currently serves as the Director of the Veterinary Microbiological Diagnostic Centre (VMDC), handling approximately 20,000 samples annually. Alongside her administrative duties, she is a deputy chair of the Clinical Infectiology Group. Her teaching encompasses clinical microbiology, diagnostics, antimicrobial stewardship, and health zoonoses, catering to students in veterinary and human medicine as well as in postgraduate programs. Els has contributed to numerous research projects addressing zoonoses such as COVID-19 and issues related to antimicrobial resistance in companion animals. She is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Microbiology and heavily involved in supervising PhD students and residents. As a member of various national and international committees, she contributes to policy and research initiatives aimed at enhancing veterinary diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship.
