Biography

Elselijn Kingma is the Sowerby Professor of Philosophy at King's College London. He obtained undergraduate degrees in Medicine and Psychology from Leiden University in 2004, followed by an MPhil in 2005 and a PhD in the History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge in 2008. Kingma received post-doctoral training in the Department of Clinical Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health in the USA. He has taught at universities including Southampton, Eindhoven, and Cambridge. Kingma is the lead investigator on a five-year, 1.2 million Euro European Research Council (ERC) research grant awarded in November 2019. His research examines the metaphysical, ethical, epistemological, and existential puzzles related to birth and pregnancy. Notably, he leads the Birth Experience Study – UK (BESt -UK), which is the UK arm of an international network aimed at understanding the childbirth experiences of women and birthing people.
