Biography

Emery N. Brown, M.D., Ph.D. serves as the Edward Hood Taplin Professor of Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience at MIT, and the Warren M. Zapol Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. As an anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, he researches the neuroscience of general anesthesia and develops statistical methods to analyze neuroscience data. Brown obtained his B.A. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in Statistics from Harvard University and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School, also magna cum laude. His research focuses on defining the neurophysiology of anesthesia and developing new methods to analyze neural data. He is a fellow of multiple prestigious associations, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. Recognized by various awards, he conducts experiments and uses mathematical modeling to study anesthesia's effects on the brain. Brown has been involved in improving patient outcomes related to anesthesia and has made significant contributions to the field of computational neuroscience. His work has received national attention, including the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award and the Gruber Prize in Neuroscience.
