Emese Kroon is a passionate early-career researcher with a background in neurobiology and psychology. Her research focuses on the multitude of internal factors, such as brain functioning, cognition, mental health, and gender, as well as external factors like social interactions, culture, and context, that contribute to the development and maintenance of substance use disorders. As a PhD candidate in the Department of Developmental Psychology at the University of Amsterdam, she has contributed to multiple lines of research concerning alcohol and cannabis use disorders, exploring a wide range of topics to unravel the fundamental neural underpinnings of addictive behaviors and the role of social interaction and cultural attitudes towards substance use. Following her doctoral work, she undertook a postdoctoral position in the Department of Psychology, Education & Child Studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where she continues her research through a large-scale international experience sampling methods (ESM) study focusing on the interplay between (neuro)cognition, mental health, and cannabis use among both medicinal and recreational users. Ultimately, she aims to inspire the academic community to embrace the complexity of substance use disorders and to treat individual differences as crucial elements that can improve treatment outcomes.
