Biography

Emilia Barakova received her Ph.D. in Mathematics and Natural Sciences from the University of Groningen in 1999, and holds a master's degree in Electronics and Automation Engineering from the Technical University of Sofia, Bulgaria. She is currently affiliated with the Department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology, where she serves as the Head of the Social Robotics Lab and leads the Transdisciplinary Research & Design research cluster. Barakova has previously worked at the Riken Brain Science Institute and the German-Japanese Robotics Research Lab in Japan, as well as the University of Groningen and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Her research focuses on the use of social robots to enhance the well-being of people with visual impairments, intellectual disabilities, and dementia, as well as in the education of children with autism spectrum disorders. She specializes in embodied social interaction technology and social cognitive robotics, merging artificial intelligence, cognitive sciences, and robotics. Barakova has served as program chair for various conferences and is an Associate Editor for several journals in the field of social robotics.
