Biography

M. Emilia Bianco is a researcher and educator specializing in gender, mental health, human rights, and social justice within the field of social work. She has worked internationally, focusing on implementing economic development programs and conducting research on women affected by structural inequality and violence. Her initiatives include developing projects aimed at assisting asylum-seeking mothers and their children arriving in the Boston area. Notably, her research examines the impact of institutional neglect and violence on maternal practices and mental health, showcasing women's agency in navigating and preserving their children's lives under difficult circumstances. Dr. Bianco is actively engaged with immigrant families in the Boston area through her work with the BC Center for Human Rights and International Justice (CHRIJ) and the Casa El Salvador project, which utilizes participatory action research to enhance immigrant families' access to services. Currently, she is the principal investigator, alongside Dr. Tami Gouveia, on an evaluation research project focused on a socio-emotional learning curriculum developed for asylum-seeking children in shelters throughout Massachusetts. Additionally, Dr. Bianco co-leads an academic-community engaged research project with Dr. Margaret Lombe DeNovo, which explores the effects of family separation policies on the well-being and dynamics of asylum-seeking families.
