Biography

Emilia Onyema is a Professor of International Commercial Law and an independent arbitrator based in London, United Kingdom. She has extensive experience as a presiding and co-sole arbitrator, as well as acting as a legal expert witness in international arbitration. Her academic career includes teaching and publishing on international arbitration and international investment law within a global commercial context at SOAS University of London. She is qualified to practice law in Nigeria and is a Solicitor in England and Wales. Additionally, she is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Emilia leads the biennial research project, the SOAS Arbitration Africa survey, and co-authored 'African Promise'. She has also conceived a training project for SOAS counsels in arbitration and serves as the Director of the SOAS Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Centre. Her active research and publications contribute significantly to discussions on energy contracts and sustainable development. She was recognized with the CPR Institute award for Outstanding Contribution to Alternative Dispute Resolution in 2024.
