Biography

Emilio Baglietto is the TEPCO Professor in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT. His research interests lie primarily in Computational Fluid Dynamics, focusing on modeling and simulation aspects pertinent to boiling heat transfer and nuclear reactor safety analysis. He has made significant contributions to the development of high-fidelity multiphase CFD frameworks that reliably predict boiling heat transfer, especially critical heat flux phenomena. Baglietto's innovative Structure-Based Turbulence (STRUCT) model allows for large eddy simulation accuracy at a fraction of the computational cost, supporting design and licensing of advanced nuclear reactors. His group also addresses uncertainty quantification through stochastic methods that enhance the predictive capabilities of thermal-fluid systems, which is crucial for regulatory applications in next-generation reactor licensing. In addition, his work expands towards creating digital twins for nuclear systems, aiding in operational monitoring and predictive maintenance. Baglietto teaches various courses, including Integration of Reactor Design, Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics, and Computational Modeling of Multiphase Flows.
