Dr. Emilio Fernandez Egea

Biography

Emilio Fernandez-Egea is a clinical academic at the University of Cambridge, specializing in Psychiatry. He serves as a consultant psychiatrist for local mental health services and leads a treatment-resistant schizophrenia unit at the Cambridge Psychosis Centre. His research focuses on translating findings in schizophrenia into innovative clinical care interventions. Emilio is the Chair of the CIBERSAM scientific external committee and serves on the NIHR-HTA funding committee, contributing to large-scale clinical trials across the UK. His academic journey began with the exploration of molecular pathways linking schizophrenia with systemic processes such as inflammation, aging, and metabolism. He has shifted his research focus towards improving the safety of treatments by investigating factors that contribute to the heterogeneity of schizophrenia, with an emphasis on neuroscience, negative symptoms, and associated comorbidities, including obsessive-compulsive disorder. His work has been supported by prominent funding bodies including NARSAD, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Medical Research Council (MRC). Emilio takes PhD students and is available for consultancy.
