Biography

Emily Eastgate Brink received her PhD from Stanford University and is currently an Associate Professor in Art History at the University of Western Australia (UWA). Before joining the School of Design at UWA, Emily worked as a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan, a Mellon Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center, and a Georges Lurcy Fellow at the Centre de Recherche sur les Civilisations de l’Asie Orientale in Paris. In addition to her teaching and research in Art History, Emily has experience as an English instructor and a potter’s apprentice in rural Japan, which informs her ongoing interest in material meaning, community, and craft. Emily has served in various roles including Deputy Head of Education and has coordinated the History of Art Honours Program at UWA. Her research primarily explores systems of knowledge related to visual expression in the nineteenth century, focusing on European engagement with Asian 'otherness' and visual material exchange. Emily is committed to fostering critical observation skills in her students, emphasizing the importance of materiality in their understanding of art. She supervises MA and PhD candidates on issues pertaining to visual expression.
