Biography

Emily Butterworth studied French at University College London and completed her education at the University of Cambridge. She worked as a lecturer at the University of Sheffield for four years before joining King’s College London in 2006. Butterworth's research interests focus on early modern literature and thought, particularly the writings of early modern women, including Montaigne and Marguerite de Navarre. Her publications include 'Poisoned Words: Slander and Satire in Early Modern France' and 'Unbridled Tongue: Babble and Gossip in Renaissance France', both exploring reputation and the politics of language in the sixteenth century. She has an AHRC-funded project entitled 'Gossip and Nonsense in the French Renaissance', alongside a recent work titled 'Marguerite de Navarre: Critical Companion', which provides a critical introduction to Navarre's literary works. Butterworth teaches a variety of undergraduate and master’s level modules within the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, covering early and pre-modern literature and culture, as well as language and translation.
