Dr. Emily Cooney

Biography

Emily Cooney, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who has worked in the UK and New Zealand, providing treatment to children and adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Her work predominantly focuses on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), where she serves as the co-director for the DBT and DBT Substance Use Disorder teams at Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital’s Adult Intensive Outpatient Program. Emily has served as a research therapist in trials of DBT led by Dr. Marsha Linehan at the University of Washington, where her contributions involved complex studies such as DBT feasibility trials in New Zealand. She compared the efficacy of DBT treatment versus usual care for self-harming adolescents and conducted field trials for DBT skills training aimed at men facing anger-related problems. In addition to her therapeutic roles, she provides training for DBT through Behavioral Tech, the organization responsible for the mandated treatment development and the adherence coding required by the Linehan Board Certification. Her research interests include evaluating treatment outcomes, adapting dialectical behavior therapy, exploring family processes in treatment, and identifying factors that influence therapist burnout and resilience.
