Professor Dr. Emily Derbyshire

Biography

Emily C R Derbyshire is a Senior Lecturer in Early Modern Studies at the University of Bristol. Her research focuses on early modern literature and culture, with particular interests in geographic and cartographic representation, as well as the dramatic works of Ben Jonson. Derbyshire explores the interactions between dramatic characters and geographic spaces, revealing Renaissance attitudes towards geography, creativity, and the playful nature of performance. Additionally, she is currently researching descriptions of physical motion in seventeenth-century lunar travel narratives. Her work unites various aspects of early modern writer's understandings and reflections on theories of spatial movement and character construction.
