Biography

Emily Elia is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg, focusing on the ERC-funded Fem-LEAD Project. She obtained her PhD in Political Science from Rice University in 2024. Her research specializes in electoral accountability, representation in contexts of subpar democratic performance, and the influence of corruption on voter and elite behavior. She investigates how voters determine the enforcement of electoral accountability against corrupt elites, along with how elites evade accountability while maintaining voter support, particularly in scenarios of malfeasance. Her work also examines the impact of elite gender on the political presence of women and its effects on electoral accountability amid corruption. Through the Fem-LEAD project, she explores the repercussions of environmental crises in the Global South on the supply and demand for women in political office. Utilizing quantitative methods, her research applies survey experiments, large-N statistical analyses, and text analysis, and has been published in Political Behavior and Electoral Studies, with significant regional focus on Latin America, including fieldwork in Argentina during her PhD.
