Biography

Emily Rose is a Departmental Lecturer at the Centre for Criminology, focusing on the intersection of social history and crime. She holds a PhD in Economic and Social History and an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Oxford, as well as an MA (Hons) in History from the University of Edinburgh. Her research primarily examines crime, criminal justice, and the portrayal of violence in news media. Emily's doctoral research explored representations of child homicide in the UK from the 1960s to the 1980s, and she is currently developing journal articles based on her findings. She has a keen interest in the emotional and ethical dimensions of research, having chaired the Emotionally Demanding Research Network at the University of Sheffield. Before joining the Centre for Criminology, she held various research and teaching positions at several universities, including the University of Sheffield, the Open University, and Queen Mary University of London. Her earlier work includes conducting oral history interviews for the Leverhulme Trust project focusing on probation services. As part of her academic role, Emily convenes several modules for the MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice, including 'News, Media, Crime and Policy' and contributes to the DPhil programme.
