Biography

Emily Kern is a historian of modern global science who specializes in the history of human evolution and paleoanthropology. She is currently working on a book that details the long history of the African origins hypothesis and searches for the cradle of humankind. Her research focuses on the relationship between the production of scientific knowledge and the political power dynamics surrounding the human species from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries. Kern graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in 2012, and holds both a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. from Princeton University, completed in 2014 and 2018 respectively. Her work examines the ways in which scientific understanding of human origins has been transformed by social and political factors, particularly in relation to decolonization and the significance of Africa in the narrative of human history.
