Biography

Emily Laidlaw is a Canada Research Chair in Cybersecurity Law and an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Calgary. She is a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation and an Associate Member of the University of Ottawa’s Centre for Law, Technology and Society. Laidlaw is currently serving as the Rovinescu Visiting Scholar focusing on anti-hate speech at the University of Ottawa. Her academic contributions span various aspects of cybersecurity law, online harms, misinformation, and defamation, drawing on her extensive experience in Canadian, UK, and international law. Laidlaw has practiced as a litigator and has returned to legal practice, operating her own law firm before joining the University of Calgary in 2014. She actively participates in law reform initiatives and collaborates with governments and organizations on impactful projects related to online safety. Committed to public scholarship, she engages in knowledge sharing through teaching, community events, and judicial education. Laidlaw has been recognized as a Peak Scholar by the University of Calgary in 2018.
