Biography

Emily Macmillan is a Departmental Lecturer in the Department of Education, focusing on secondary mathematics education. With a specialization in secondary mathematics, Emily has taught across a wide variety of schools on multiple continents, engaging with students from Reception to A-Level. She has worked in the charitable sector, where she was involved in designing curricula, creating and publishing classroom resources, and supporting teachers' professional development in schools throughout the UK. Her primary research interest lies in mathematics pedagogy, particularly the examination of the tensions in pedagogical approaches to mathematics education within large multi-academy trusts. She investigates how these tensions can be exacerbated or eased by the use of centralized resources. Emily is also dedicated to providing opportunities for students to engage in mathematical thinking and to discuss how their thinking affects their ability to solve unfamiliar problems. Her DPhil thesis explored the impact of teaching mathematical proof on students' argumentation skills.
