Biography

Emily McLaughlin grew up in Derry, Northern Ireland, and studied French and Spanish at Oxford University, where she completed her postgraduate studies at Royal Holloway. She has been a Junior Research Fellow at Queen’s College, Oxford, and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at Christ’s College, Cambridge. Emily's research focuses on contemporary French literature, with a special emphasis on ecocriticism and ecological thought. Her current project explores the significant threats posed by global environmental crises, particularly climate change, as seen through the lens of twentieth- and twenty-first-century writers who reevaluate the human perspective on life forms. She interrogates the works of recent French and Francophone writers, examining their interactions with nonhuman presences such as plants, animals, minerals, and bacteria. Emily also teaches a variety of courses at the university level, including literary analysis and translation, and she particularly enjoys guiding students through the works of authors like Samuel Beckett and Marguerite Duras.
