Biography

Emily Remnant is an Early Career Development Fellow at the University of Sydney specializing in genetics and evolutionary biology, particularly in the context of insects and their responses to environmental changes. Her research employs genetics and genomics to explore the genetic mechanisms of resistance to chemical insecticides and the impact of viral diseases on beneficial insects such as honey bees. With a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2012, which investigated genetic changes related to insecticide resistance in Drosophila melanogaster, she joined the University of Sydney in the same year. Remnant's work focuses on the evolution of virulence in honey bee viruses and the understanding of host-parasite interactions, notably with Varroa mites which are significant threats to honey bee populations. Her research employs various methodologies including RNA sequencing and bioinformatics to gain insights into the molecular basis of evolution and the dynamics of viral transmission in honey bees.
